Nashville, Tennessee (WKRN) — Many parents in central Tennessee were hesitant to send their children to school on Wednesday morning. This was due to a tragic school shooting in Yuvarde, Texas on Tuesday that claimed the lives of 19 students and two teachers.
“It’s not safe to send my boy to school,” said Jamonte Prewitt. “My mom told me about homeschooling, but I don’t think it’s an option.”
Prewitt was one of several parents News2 talked about school safety. The majority of them said the school should function as a sanctuary for children, but instead it is targeted.
Parents disagreed on whether to add officers or tighten gun control. Some even said that this tragedy would be swept under the floor covering like other school shootings.
On Wednesday morning, Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake had police officers visit all 70 elementary schools. Some parents said it gave them more peace of mind, but they are still worried about safety.
“We need something to happen from the leader,” said Jane Smithson. “Children deserve a safe place to learn.”
Several parents said it was important that the pandemic had an impact on their children and that they were in school. But if nothing changes about the law, they may take the child out of a school without a resource officer.
