LinkedIn adds Hindi to reach 500 million people in India – TechCrunch

Date:

Less than 20% of India’s 1.3 billion people speak English. But LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional social network, has so far only addressed this fragment of the world’s second-largest Internet market population. On Thursday, a service owned by Microsoft said it was starting to change.

LinkedIn said Thursday that it has started supporting Hindi on social networks. Hindi is the language spoken or understood by more than 500 million people in India and more than 600 million people worldwide and is the first regional language of India supported by social networks.

The company, which offers services in 25 languages, said its website and mobile app will give users access to feeds, profiles and messages in Hindi. Users can also create content in Hindi via LinkedIn’s desktop and mobile apps.

India is a major market for some global services, but LinkedIn is struggling to penetrate deep into India. According to analytics firm Similarweb, India accounts for just over 6% of LinkedIn’s more than 1.3 billion visits a month. According to the company, India has more than 82 million users, of which more than 20 million have participated in the service over the last three years.

“In India, LinkedIn was mission-critical to help people connect, learn, grow and be hired during a pandemic. With the launch of Hindi, more members and customers are bigger. We are now able to derive value. We will build a platform through content, work and networking and express ourselves in a language that they feel comfortable with, “said Ashutosh Gupta, LinkedIn’s Indian Country Manager. I am saying.

LinkedIn said it will work to expand the range of employment opportunities available to Hindi-speaking professionals across the industry in the coming months. We will also be adding Hindi publishers and creators in the coming weeks to increase our engagement with Hindi on our platform.
