Los Angeles — The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office has stated that his agency will not enforce the county’s vaccine obligations.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva, who oversees the country’s largest security department with approximately 18,000 employees, had to be fully vaccinated by October at a Facebook Live event on Thursday. He said he had no plans to carry out his mission. .. 1.

The mandate was issued by Executive Order in August and only grants religious and medical exemptions. Villanueva said his employees were willing to be fired rather than vaccinated.

“I don’t want to be in a position to lose 5-10% of the workforce overnight on a vaccine mission,” the sheriff said.

More than 26,000 people have died from the coronavirus in Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the country.

Of the approximately 10 million inhabitants of the county, 78% have been vaccinated at least once and 69% have been fully vaccinated, according to public health officials.

Health officials said the county reported an average of 14 deaths a day, despite a drop in deaths and hospitalizations of about 50% since late August.

The announcement of Villanueva came the day after the City of Los Angeles approved one of the strictest vaccine obligations in the United States. This is a drastic step that requires shots from bars, restaurants, nail salons, gyms, and even everyone who participates in Lakers games.
