On the penultimate weekend of the season, Salem Capitals is beginning to take shape after the season, after a rough stretch in the second half of the season.
Vincent Bouman and Paul Hufford carried the Capitals on their backs, winning two weekends and scoring a total of 128 points in the two games.
On Saturday, May 21st, in Vancouver, the Capitals won 123-93 and dragged only once 6-4, which lasted only eight seconds.
Boumann scored 34 points on a 14-24 shot and 5-8 points on the line. Booman also won 11 rebounds and 7 assists.
Hufford’s Saturday also produced double-doubles, 31 points and 14 rebounds. Hufford, a 33% three-point shooter of the season, was 4-8 on Saturday.
As a team, Capitals shot 52%. This is a major shift from the last few weeks when shooting rates have dropped significantly.
Hufford said he was always confident as a shooter because he took millions of shots in his life as a self-proclaimed “old man on the team.”
But team games are what he feels to increase the confidence of the team.
“Passing the ball gives everyone confidence in the shot together,” Hufford said. “Move things quickly and on time to your goals. It’s a good shooter.”
The team’s shooting chilled against Magic on Sunday as the Capitals shot only 25% across the arc.
But Hufford has been hot. He finished 5 to 11 out of three with 26 points and 8 assists.
Booman, the most consistent and aggressive piece for Capitals this season, was completely dominant inside. His 37 points and 16 rebounds led both teams, with Big Man 8-9 from the free throw line.
Tyler West Jr. messed up the Capitals and dropped a triple-double on Sunday, scoring 17 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
Capitals is currently heading towards the final week of the third-place regular season in the West. All six teams are in the playoffs, so if they can win, they still have a chance to buy the first round, and SoCal Moguls will drop both games this weekend.
Salem will visit Vancouver on Friday 27th May for a rematch with the volcano and will host San Diego Shark on Sunday 29th May.
