Isotta Fraschini, planes, boats, luxury cars (Part IV)

Today, I conclude the story of a company called Isotta Fraschini. I started As a simple import business, but has grown rapidly Successful race To be one of the most acclaimed luxury car manufacturers in the world. At the end of us entryThe Great Depression completed IF’s last passenger car, the 8B, in 1934. The company then moved to heavy-duty truck manufacturing alongside marine and aircraft engines. These trucks were still in production when Isotta Fraschini began a Grand Final attempt to return to the luxury car market.

Mussolini’s fascist government had instructed Isotta Fraschini what to build and where to build it, but some of Isotta Fraschini’s top brass and engineers felt that the company should return to passenger cars. Therefore, the Secret Skunk Works project began in 1943, while World War II raged outside. The new car is the first post-war offer from IF and brings the company back to its former glory. The project may be fully developed, but will be put on hold at any time until normal commercial production resumes after the war.

IF 8C Monterosa 2The new car very It was in a different direction than other Isotta Fraschini products and had little in common with the company’s previous portfolio. Designed as a sportier luxury sedan, coupe and convertible, the 40’s Isotta Fraschini was smooth and aerodynamic. The body has an overall bathtub-shaped design that integrates the headlamps and fenders and divides the windshield. A large single headlamp with a driving lamp at the bottom, placed between grilles flush with the front clip. No hard edges were found in the design. This is what IF called Tipo8C Monte Rosa. The body of the sedan was completed by Zagato, the two-door sedan was completed by touring, and the convertible was completed by Boneschi. The overall look was elegant and modern at the time. Regardless of body type, the 8C had space for six adult passengers. The shape was created by Vieri Rapi, who usually painted the design of a fighter.

With the 8C adopting a rear engine, rear drive layout, the engineering (Isotta Fraschini’s powerful suit) was also completely new. Well-known engine designer Aurelio Lampredi (1917-1989) worked at IF after creating a new power plant and designing a Vespa engine at Piaggio. The engine used overhead valves and overhead cams and was theoretically offered in three different displacements. Engine diversity was the first for the company to diverge from its pre-established stance of one chassis and one engine. The displacement of the V8 was 2.5, 3.0, or 3.4 liters. Buyers can expect a top speed of about 125 horsepower, a top speed of 106 mph, and a consumption of 19 miles per gallon. The engine was water-cooled and the hemi started. Powering the rear wheels was a 4-speed manual transmission with a shifter mounted on the column.

IF 8C MonterosaThe 8C’s 122-inch wheelbase was significantly shorter than the company’s pre-war product. Recall that the standard 8A used a 145-inch wheelbase. The 8C curb weighs only 3,190 pounds, much like a modern Chevrolet Malibu. The weight reduction is due to the weight reduction of the engine, transmission, and rear differential. They were made from high-tech Elektron aluminum alloy. Elektron is still in business and manufactures ultra-lightweight magnesium racing car parts. The 8C used a completely independent suspension with hydraulic shock absorbers throughout and a rubber elastic suspension component at the rear. Unusually, the 8C was a self-jack for maintenance purposes. There were hydraulic jacks in all four corners that could be activated via the dashboard switch.

IF 8C 4When World War II ended in 1945 and normal production resumed worldwide, Isotta Fraschini finished the new car. The rare technologically advanced 8C Monte Rosa made its debut in 1947 at the Paris Motor Salon. IF had already created some examples for the 8C victory debut, but it didn’t work. The public was not so interested in the funky looking 8C and was migrating to other luxury products. Also, factor: IF’s finances were completely confused after the war, and there was little time to try luxury cars again.

After the 8C flop, the company undertook several restructuring efforts to maintain ownership of the Italian assembly plant that manufactures engines and heavy trucks. By 1955 all trucks were discontinued. The IF was able to hold two 8C prototypes in their own hands, and they were functional, but as far as Monte Rosa has ever gotten. Both 8Cs held were two doors, one was a coupe and the other was a convertible. A total of 5-6 Monte Rosas were produced. The rest of IF’s auto assembly plants were remodeled to manufacture marine engines instead.

IF’s D80 and D65 truck production ended in 1955, when the company merged with another engine maker, Breda Motri. The resulting company was called FA Isotta Fraschini e Motori Breda. The newly merged company was more commercially successful and manufactured trolleys in the late 1950s. IF-MB has also built a new diesel plant in Bari, Italy.

Moving forward as a small company, the company was reorganized in the 1980s. The engine business was split into Isotta Fraschini Motori SpA and absorbed as a subsidiary of Fincateri. Fincateri is an Italian shipbuilding company based in Trieste, Italy, founded in 1959. It is currently the fourth largest shipbuilding company in the world, building military and commercial vessels. Fincateri has relocated IF’s headquarters from Milan to the old Bari diesel plant. Meanwhile, IF has branched into another small division. It’s Isotta Fraschini Milano, a manufacturer of luxury retail products.

IF T8 2

In the mid-’90s, there was a renewed interest in IF returning to luxury cars, and someone at Fincateri must have put some money in it. IF has asked renowned designer Tom Jada to create a new luxury two-door T8 coupe. The T8 was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1996.With an aluminum body, four-wheel drive, and a 4.2-liter V8 from Audi, the T8 rang. largely Like the early Audi Super TT.

IF T12

However, the T8 variety looked like a Lincoln-Audi-Fiat amalgam. Plans were made to build the T8 at a former weapons factory in southern Italy, but the T8 never went beyond the conceptual stage. Same as 8c in 1947. However, IF didn’t spend money on the concept and became even bigger when the T12 Coupe debuted in 1998. Like the T8, it was aluminum, four-wheel drive and could be used as a coupe and spider. Well, there was a V12 under the hood. Perhaps the V12 produced 400 horsepower and, if it was 1998, it must have come from Ferrari or Lamborghini. right? The details of T12 are very scarce.

IF T12 2

The T12 was very similar to the T8 and wore the same body. It was differentiated by a slightly different front clip and a more upright Monte Rosa-like grille. The T12 with multi-spoke wheels, with the T8 as a sports coupe, seemed suitable for the grand touring end of the market. Like the T8, the T12 didn’t go exactly anywhere.IF T12 3

Isotta Fraschini was almost dead at that time and went bankrupt in 1999. By 2000, the company’s remaining (and few) automotive assets had been sold, but the Motori division still manufactures engines. It seems like a luxury item if the Milan division didn’t last long, but it’s not. Overall death. The company is active Website As of 2019, the rear lamp of the new supercar and the old tagline “No Two Alike” of the 1930s are displayed. Make it by what you do.IF Milano 2019
