Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and the second-largest city of Spain, after Madrid. It is a very visited city and one of the most popular destinations for tourists and for those who decide to study Spanish abroad.

Barcelona is a cosmopolitan city with a very busy and vibrant atmosphere, packed with bars, shops, and restaurants; with a very large natural environment, from a paradisiacal coastline on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea to beautiful mountains and large parks full of trees and vegetation. If you are thinking that Barcelona could be a good destination to study Spanish, you are right! Traveling to Barcelona to learn about the Hispanic language and culture is an excellent idea. This city, proud of its heritage and unparalleled beauty, is ideal for your language study trip. You can find more information at  this link.

What are the advantages of learning Spanish in Barcelona?

One of the main advantages of learning Spanish in Barcelona is that it is a multicultural city, which will allow you to get in touch with students from different parts of the world and make new friends with people from other cultures. This will enrich you both on a human and professional level, as you will be able to expand your knowledge and your contacts.

If you decide to study at a Spanish school in Barcelona, you will find this city has a very sporty environment. In fact, Barcelona is one of the cities in Spain where people do more sports, whether it is running, cycling, walking, water sports, playing ping pong on tables in parks throughout the city, playing tennis and many other sports. Sport is a big part of daily life in Barcelona, which enables a healthy lifestyle; and not only physically, but also mentally, when combined with the huge nature-filled parks and bike paths throughout the city. This can be very beneficial for foreign students as they have to adjust to their new lives.

Barcelona always offers something to do. This amazing city provides a lot of entertainment. The cultural agenda is packed with a wide range of options, tons of cultural events organized by the city. There are also dozens of museums to visit and many attractions, and, of course, we cannot fail to mention de beach, with its blue waters and colorful sunsets, where people can spend the day relaxing or engaging in some water sport.

The nightlife in Barcelona is one of the most electrics in Europe, along with the city of Madrid, which is also another popular destination for foreign students. Barcelona is full of clubs that invite you to spend the night dancing up to early hours in the morning, and filled with bars and restaurants where you can have some drinks and “tapas”, or you can go to see some flamenco shows, among tons of other things. And the best part is that there is an activity for every taste, budget, and need!

Barcelona is a city full of art and history, so if you are passionate about them you are going to love this city. There are a lot of prominent architectural monuments, museums, parks, promenades, and more. One of the most famous places in Barcelona is “Park Güell”, where you can observe the wonderful and colorful buildings made by Antonio Gaudí, a famous Catalan architect. Gaudí created incredible architectural works when he was living in Barcelona; using diverse elements like carpentry, ceramics, and glass. Another impressive unfinished masterpiece he made is the “Basilica de la Sagrada Familia”.  He began its construction in 1883 and died before finishing it. Currently, the construction of this monument is ongoing, and it is expected to be finished in 2026. This church is imposing, it will be the tallest Christian church in the world with towers that will reach 172 meters.

Does being in a Catalan city prevent you from learning Spanish well?

It is important to clarify that Barcelona is a Catalan city. In fact, it is the capital of Catalonia, and therefore its official language is Catalan; but it is not the only one. Barcelona has two official languages, Catalan and Spanish. In this city people speak both languages fluently, so Catalan is not an impediment to learning Spanish. In fact, far from being an impediment, it can be a benefit. Living in a bilingual city encourages students to become bilingual themselves. Seeing and experiencing this bilingual atmosphere allows them to understand that they too can learn how to communicate fluently in more than one language.

So, if you decide to take Spanish lessons in Barcelona, you may also learn a little bit (or a lot) of Catalan, since it will be a part of your life (you will see the signs in the street written in Catalan, or on the restaurant´s menu, or on a billboard). However, this is not a disadvantage or a problem for your studies, but a possibility to enrich your linguistic (and also cultural) diversity, which also helps to understand the importance of diversity itself. Besides, what harm can it do to incorporate basic words in a third language?

Some locals speak English, but most don´t

You will find that some locals also speak in English, but they are mostly the ones that work in tourist places, like restaurants. However, you should not expect much more than that, as most Catalans cannot speak English in a fluent way at all. Catalans in general don´t handle a high level of English compared to other cities in Spain. If you find yourself asking for directions in the street in English, you may not get the help you need. However, locals will always try their best to help you in every way they can. They are very peaceful and friendly, just be patient and try to communicate with each other.

    Conclusion

Learning Spanish in Barcelona will allow you to communicate with local people and will enhance your travel experience. A language trip is definitely the best way of learning Spanish, and the best destination is Barcelona!
