United Airlines Acquired a stake in Zero Avia, a company focused on powering electric motors using hydrogen fuel cells.

Under the deal, United said it plans to purchase up to 100 ZeroAvia ZA2000-RJs, an engine described as zero emissions and 100% hydrogen electricity.

The airline said the engine was “expected to be used in pairs as a new power source for aircraft in existing regions.”

United said it plans to pursue a conditional purchase agreement for 50 engines, with an additional 50 options. He added that this technology could be retrofitted to aircraft from 2028.

In a statement released Monday, United CEO Scott Kirby said the hydrogen-electric engine is “one of the most promising paths to zero-emission air travel for small aircraft.”

In another announcement, Zero Avia said it had raised $ 35 million.Alongside United, others participating in the funding round include: Alaska Airlines Group, The investment was previously announced.

In total, ZeroAvia says it has raised $ 115 million in investments from a variety of stakeholders, including Shell Ventures, Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, and Breakthrough Energy Ventures.

As a sustainability and environmental concern that the World Wildlife Fund describes air travel as “the most carbon-intensive activity an individual can do,” the aviation debate has new technologies and ideas for its environmental footprint. We are increasingly focusing on how we can reduce.

Over the past few years, many companies have sought to develop plans and concepts related to low-emission and zero-emission aviation.

In some quarters, we’re excited about the potential of new low-emission aviations, but some in the industry are cautious about how such innovations will evolve over the next few years.

Talking to CNBC in October, for example, Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary was cautious about the outlook for new technologies in this sector.

“I … I think we should be honest again,” he said. “Sure, I don’t think we’ll see anything in the next decade. There’s no technology to replace carbon and Jet Aviation.”

“… No hydrogen fuel has arrived. No sustainable fuel has arrived. Certainly no electric propulsion system has arrived before 2030,” he added.
