Impact of forest thinning on wildfires creates divisions

Sacramento, CA (AP) — Firefighters and many studies trust forest thinning projects to help save communities like near Lake Tahoe. However, opposition from some environmental groups has caused a sensation in the scientific community.

Every year, the states and federal governments of the western United States thin thousands of acres of dense timber and carve wide strips into forests near remote communities.

It is designed to slow the spread of large wildfires.

Forest managers also believe that they have deliberately set fire to help protect the huge forests of Sequoia National Park. However, some environmental advocates argue that recent wildfire data support their claim that efforts to delay wildfires have instead accelerated their spread.
