Honolulu (KHON2) — Hawaii’s first Anger Room provides cancer patients with space to crush their cancer just in time for October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

An “angry room” is a place where people can go and destroy things.

“People are angry. People are frustrated, but they just want to have a good time and do something different,” said Break’N Anger co-founder Cody Jarrett.

However, the owner of Break’N Anger in Honolulu wants to not only provide fun activities to people, but also do more for the community. That’s why the company offers free sessions to people fighting cancer through the Smash Cancer program.

Claire Hanus has recently begun to experience a room of anger for herself. Hawaii Kai’s Hanus was diagnosed with breast cancer on Christmas 2020.

“I broke the wine glass and expressed the alcohol I shouldn’t have. It was really, really nice.”

Claire Hanus said during her “Smash Cancer” session

Hanus said the relief he felt at Break and Anger was very necessary, especially since last year. The lawyer and her two mothers have undergone five months of chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and double mastectomy, and she is currently receiving radiation therapy.

“I lost about £ 25 … the food just tasted bad,” Hanus said of what he was doing when he received chemotherapy. “Even worse than my head hair, I lost all my eyelashes and all my eyebrows. I’m sick. Something seems wrong.”

One of the owners of Break’N Anger said he had an accurate understanding of what Claire Hanus was experiencing. This is because she endured the same experience a while back.

Carolina Palotti, one of Break’N Anger’s co-founders, fought blood cancer in the summer of 2021.

“It was four months of chemotherapy, and thankfully my body responded really well, and now I’m in complete remission,” Parotti said.

As a result of Palotti’s journey with cancer, Break’N Anger owners wanted to provide free space to those who are currently fighting to give them the punch they deserve.

“I can’t solve the problem, but I can give them a little space to enjoy,” Parotti said about how their “smash canceler” program has become.

Rage Room participants are encouraged to write on objects of what they want to destroy from their lives. Hanus wrote “I hate cancer” and “chemotherapy” on several tiles.

“I’m angry that it’s a life-changing illness that changed my mother’s life,” Hanus said.

Despite her anger at cancer, Claire Hanus continues to push forward, with the message that she is experiencing the same with others.

“If you need to lose a body part, like I lost both breasts, you are more than that body part and you face a strong and proud world. I can.”
