Massage the upper arm is known to relieve swelling by stimulating the lymph nodes that process toxins in the body. Because cancers such as breast and melanoma metastasize primarily through the lymphatic system, it is essential to know the condition of the lymph nodes to access the stage and prognosis of the cancer. Recently, POSTECH’s research team has developed a portable photoacoustic viewfinder that helps examine the condition of lymph nodes without radiation exposure.

A research team led by Professor Chulhong Kim, Dr. Byullee Park, and Ph.D. in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Convergence IT Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering at POSTECH. Candidates Moongyu Han and Jeongwoo Park are WONTECH Co., Ltd. In collaboration with, we have developed a handheld photoacoustic viewfinder (PAF) with solid dyes. laser Transparent ultrasonic transducer (TUT). Unlike traditional gamma probes, this non-radioactive PAF eliminates the risk of exposure to radiation and the need for special equipment, enabling cost-effective repetitive use. The results of this study have recently been Photoacoustic, An international journal ranked in the top 0.78% in this area.

A sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy around the cancer is commonly done to assess the metastasis of breast and melanoma. This is because SLN has a tumor Lymph node.. However, because traditional biopsies use radioisotopes to detect SLNs, patients and physicians are inevitably exposed to radiation, and the procedure requires special equipment to access the radioactive material. ..

In response, the research team placed a spherically focused TUT (converting device) coaxially. electoronic signals Receive or receive ultrasound Ultrasound It is converted into an electrical signal using a solid-state dye laser handpiece (a medical laser commonly used in dermatological skin treatments). The photoacoustic signal is generated when the laser irradiates the colored area and is detected by an ultrasonic transducer. Traditional ultrasonic transducers are opaque and cannot be coaxially coupled to a laser. However, using TUT technology acquired by the research team, the laser and ultrasonic transducers are coaxially integrated into one small handpiece to easily detect photoacoustic signals.

Researchers have used a photoacoustic viewfinder to inject a blue dye into a mouse and then successfully place the SLN under the armpit of the mouse, which is placed under the chicken breast. In addition, the photoacoustic viewfinder also detected melanoma in mice that were subcutaneously injected with melanoma (malignant). cancer) Place it under the chicken breast and use the viewfinder to verify that the colored malignant tumor can be detected.

“We believe that the photoacoustic viewfinder (PAF) system we have proposed is the first portable. Photoacoustic Professor Chulhong Kim, who led the study, described it as a “sensing tool for SNL localization,” and said, “This study will help detect SLN or melanoma in the future without the use of radioactive material.” It shows the possibility. “

This research was carried out with the support of the Korea National Research Foundation’s Basic Science Research Program and National R & D Program, funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the POSCO Project, and the BK21 FOUR Project.
