Groups to honor victims of road traffic crashes in Tennessee – Nashville-Davidson, Tennessee

    Nashville-Davidson, Tennessee 2021-11-21 07:35:04 –

Nashville, Tennessee (WTVF) —Chuck Isbel knows how he feels when his child is gone.

His son, 13-year-old Nate, died last Halloween after being attacked by a speed-violating driver in a residential area of Rutherford County. Isbell said he has been working for over a year to reduce the speed limit in residential areas to 25 in the county and place a stop sign where his son was killed.

“People want to get rid of the word accident, but it’s not an accident. They are preventable deaths,” Isbell said. “Parents don’t have to bury their children. No parents.”

At the ceremony on Sunday, he and others remember those who died on a world day in memory of road traffic victims at a pedestrian bridge at 4:30 pm.

Like Isbel, two groups in Nashville are asking Mayor John Cooper to slow down the speed limit and fix the seven streets that are causing the majority of pedestrian deaths in particular.

The families of Safe Street Nashville and Walk Bike Nashville leaders said they believed they were able to prevent these deaths in the light of the recent rash of pedestrian deaths.

By 2020, seven roads accounted for more than 50% of all pedestrian deaths, the group aggregated. These roads are Dickerson Pike, Rosa Parks Pike, Charlotte Pike, Old Hickory Boulevard, Gallatin / Main Street, Murfreesboro Road and Buena Vista Pike.

According to the organization, infrastructure upgrades such as signal timing changes, pedestrian island additions, pedestrian crossing upgrades, and lighting additions have all proven to dramatically reduce collisions.
