Greek lawmakers approved a law on Wednesday requiring all residents over the age of 60 to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to combat the proliferation of infections and the emergence of Omicron variants.

The bill, supported by the centre-right government and the centre-left opposition, but rejected by all other opposition parties, targets the age group of countries most vulnerable to coronavirus death or invasion.

About 17% of Greeks over the age of 60 have not yet been vaccinated. They need to get their first jab by January 16th. Otherwise, you will be fined € 100 ($ 113) per month without being vaccinated.

Parties who opposed the bill said it was too strict Low-income earners People who do not want to be vaccinated.

Prime Minister Kiriacos Mitsutakis said he reluctantly proposed because of the “mysterious” facts. Nine out of ten Greeks who died of COVID-19 are over 60 years old. Seven out of ten patients intubated in the intensive care unit belong to the same age group, and more than eight out of ten are unvaccinated.

In a debate, Mitsutakis said 17% of unvaccinated people over the age of 60 were “too big to ignore.”

“There is no doubt that these are the people at the highest risk,” he said. “But they are the ones who surround them, even though they are not protected. Public health system, Stealing treatment from thousands of other people with very serious health problems. “

Last month, the government tightened restrictions on unvaccinated mandatory tests on all non-essential stores, services, and venues, including outdoor cafes. Authorities say it has spurred a surge in vaccination, but not among people over the age of 60.

About 2 million vaccinations have been booked in the last three weeks, according to Mitsutakis. But out of 580,000 Unvaccinated people Only 70,000 people over the age of 60 booked their first jab.

“I don’t care if the bill gets additional votes in the election,” Mitsutakis said. “We are confident that we are doing the right thing, and we are confident that this policy will save lives.”

Forced vaccination does not apply to people who have recovered from COVID-19 in the last 6 months or who have serious health problems such as autism or epilepsy.Fines are added to the tax bill following cross-references with the state’s social security database and cultivated by the state’s citizens health system.
