Get Back: The Beatles spine-tingling final concert hits theaters this weekend

The Beatles get together to record and shoot Let It Be. The Disney + documentary “Get Back” will revisit the opportunity decades later.

My dad saw the Beatles live once. Many have done so, but I think my dad’s story was a bit special. He had the chance to clean up after a youth club dance and catch four up-and-coming local youths, a night entertainer jamming together on stage. Watching John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr messing around together early in his career, he picked up a goose bump as I got from a new documentary. Did you put it in? regainProvides an intimate close-up of the Fab Four, which broke on the last day.

Director Peter Jackson’s Get Back takes us in 1969 to challenge a long-established story about the last days of The Beatles. This is a documentary series consisting of three long episodes, currently streamed. Disney plus The series fully includes the band’s final live performance, which will be shown at IMAX theaters in the US and UK on Sunday, January 30th, followed by regular theaters. February 11th.

A thorough look inside the process of songwriting and recording (and to be honest, a little exhausted) reveals that the four most famous musicians in the world are wondering if they want to be the Beatles. It will be uploaded. It’s definitely a hypnotic treat for musicologists and Beatles mega fans. But even if the undercurrent of suspense over the band’s fate is absorbed, Get Back is watching the guys sitting in the room for eight hours.

By 1969, the group had drifted after growing from a confused teenage gang in the late 1950s to a praised lord of Beatlemania in the 1960s. After a backlash from American religious types to Lennon’s Grib’s remark that he was more famous than Jesus, they gave up the tour to focus on increasingly complex and experimental music. However, the side effect of multitrack time-saving innovations meant that they played individually, not together as a unit, as other commitments and relationships strained their friendships.

Feeling they needed to regain their old energy, the band decided to write and record an album in two weeks. And in a few years they built for their first live gig. They also decided to shoot everything. However, the resulting movie “Let It Be” turned out to be very different because the Beatles were gone by the time it was released.

The Beatles will perform their final concert on the rooftop of London in January 1969.

For decades, Let It Be has been seen as an ingenious rock text that looks inside a band on the verge of implosion. But Get Back begins with a sharp disclaimer about rethinking the myth, modifying it to some extent, and portraying what happened when it happened and the people at that moment. The new series sifts through 56 hours of invisible footage and over 150 hours of unheard-of audio, and the three long episodes leave far more nuances.

Certainly, there is a clear tension. Harrison makes his pitch more involved, but opposes McCartney’s leadership. McCartney, meanwhile, is desperate for a lack of enthusiasm. Lennon is always late and Yoko Ono is always on his shoulders. As the camera carefully rolls from the other side of the cave-like claustrophobic studio where the band gathers to rehearse, the four tell the real story of the downturn.

And there is external pressure to be the largest pop group on the planet. After the manager’s death, The Beatles are now in control of themselves, taking into account the hassle of having to get the record label’s EMI equipment. Filming director Michael Lindsay-Hogg desperately continues to propose that the band perform in Libyan amphitheaters and children’s hospitals. And the clock is ticking as Ringo has to make a movie with Peter Sellers.

The Beatles will write and record the songs that will appear on their final albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be.

But Get Back also shows that a lot of creative people are having fun. Lennon makes everyone laugh with his stupid voice, everyone pulls piss out of McCartney’s beard, and they’re wandering around in a dirty version of Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da. The camera captures Lennon staring at Harrison’s performance. John and Yoko dance slowly to the jam session, and Ono, who is always present but almost completely silent, can be seen joking with McCartney’s soon-to-be-wife Linda. There is a fun moment when Linda’s little daughter, Heather, cheekyly joins the song. And after hours of watching a crisis around Harrison, it’s really heartwarming to see him unable to stop smiling when others comically ruin the take. ..

Best of all, Get Back shows a youth gangster who is magical. The film begins with a loose shot of musicals and filming equipment set up as John, Paul, George, and Ringo float in the seats of the first song. They eagerly looked at each other, locked in new songs, and joked with each other as they slipped in and out of the ditch. It’s fascinating.

This happens many times, whether you’re tinkering with Bob Dylan or Chuck Berry songs, or feeling the potential for The Long and Winding Road lyrics. When they struggle with so many early versions of iconic songs, you find yourself waiting to cheer them on and find the right words you know. ..

McCartney’s love and understanding of music is contagious because it connects what they are doing with a broader musical tradition. Inspiration comes when Harrison talks about what he saw on television last night and how the jarring juxtaposition between the two shows caused I Me Mine’s song. You can get an interesting glance at what. And you can see the Beatles subtly and happily exchanging instruments and shaping the sound together, just as his dad was pushing a broom in the back room of Merseyside.

I’m from Wirral, a lush peninsula across the river from Liverpool, and I’ve played many times as the Beatles grew up, but my parents’ record collection didn’t have anything unusual or collector’s items. We were not a musical home. To be honest, I wasn’t even a big Beatles fan in particular. They were the cluttered main / only common concern of my parents’ Easy Listening LPs. I’m convinced that I’m not the only one to connect with my parents through The Beatles as a kind of background radiation that goes beyond the taste of music.

On paper, GetBack looks like a perfect holiday season family watch. So please do your best. My dad would have slept in his chair within minutes. Not only is it very long, it’s also quite static. Get Back is great at catching the boredom and frustration of a band waiting for a missing member to appear, but it’s Show me actually Sitting around boring and frustrated because of aaages. Episode 2, where music production stops when one member of the band disappears, makes Jackson’s Hobbit movie simply look like masterclass.

“Are you aware that this tape takes 2 shillings per foot?” Someone asked at some point during the recording session, and it feels like a question that someone at Disney might have asked Jackson.

The Academy Award-winning director is famous for extending the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films to various cuts. You probably need multiple versions of GetBack. It may not be the spirit of things, but if you can choose only music, chat, or fight, you can have an easier time.

Still, if you have the time, you will become aware of and empathize with these icons at the human level. And the footage is full of impressive moments, whether it’s a big zoom to an abandoned microphone or a private conversation captured by a recorder hidden in a flowerpot. As a bonus, there is the continued joy of clothing: every day, the band and their camp followers show off in bright shirts and cravats, flashy fluffy coats and deliciously stylish suits.

And of course, it all leads to big moments, gigs. Hours ago, band members were still disagreeing about whether they wanted to go up to the rooftop. But they go. Get Back includes the entire 42-minute show taken at lunchtime in January 1969 on a frozen rooftop above Savile Row in London. It was a noisy and unique moment in rock history. How to say goodbye.

I said goodbye to my parents in 2020 (a pandemic prevented us from spending time with them towards the end, but neither was from COVID). Back in our old house, my brother and I finally looked at the old record collection. The tattered 7-inch and worn-out Abbey Road tape cassettes reminded me of my dad’s story and that my mom and dad were dancing when they were young.

The last time I saw mom and dad together was on a Beatles tour around Liverpool, where I met my new baby daughter for the second time. My little girl is now a toddler, she sings Yellow Submarine in the bath and splashes toys of the right shade. She na-na-naaas with Hey Jude in the car, but it never fails to wrap me and my wife in the fog. Of course, that doesn’t mean she pays attention when I air the Get Back concert on TV during the holidays, but don’t worry.

I will see it together someday. For now, leave it as it is.
