    Germany’s economy grew 2.7% in 2021

    By Maria Martinez

Germany’s gross domestic product increased 2.7% in 2021 compared to the previous year, Germany’s Statistical Office Destatis said on Friday.

This follows a 4.6% reduction in 2020 due to a coronavirus pandemic.

“Economic development relied heavily on Covid-19 infection rates and related precautions in 2021,” said Georg Thiel, director of statistics at Germany.

Despite further pandemic turmoil, delivery bottlenecks and material shortages, Germany’s economy has recovered from last year’s sharp decline, but economic performance has yet to reach pre-crisis levels, Thiel said.

GDP in 2021 was 2.0% lower than in 2019, the year before the Covid-19 crisis began.
