    Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell died of complications from 84-year-old Covid-19. It was announced on Monday.

    Former General Powell, who was a key figure leading up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq and chaired the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the early 1990s, was treated by Covid at Walter Reed National Medical. Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He was completely vaccinated against the coronavirus.

    His family, who announced his death, said he had lost “a remarkable loving husband, father, grandfather, and great American.”

    He was the first Black Secretary of State in the United States and played that role under George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005. Powell was born in New York City.
