Fitness members take new Oahu COVID-19 rules in stride – Honolulu, Hawaii

Honolulu, Hawaii 2021-09-19 02:48:34 –

Training sessions at the gym make up a large part of the daily life of 43-year-old Alim Shabaz.

A new Safe Access Oahu program that requires patrons to show complete COVID-19 vaccination evidence or negative test results at the gym is a fitness enthusiast at Ewa Beach from his regular sessions at 24-hour fitness. There was little disappointment for a Shabaz in Pearl City.

“The check-in process was seamless,” said Shabazz, three husbands and fathers who have been members of the gym for 26 years.

Regarding the new mission, Shabaz said: … (Pandemic) doesn’t last forever. This is just a moment and we need to keep moving forward. “

Monday is the first day of the Safe Access Orf Program and all patrons range from bars, restaurants, gyms, cinemas, bowling alleys, archery and archery.

The new mandate is valid for 60 days to reduce the number of COVID-19 cases and the influx of hospitalizations.

For gyms such as 24-hour fitness and YMCA in Honolulu, members only need to show their vaccination card once, at which point staff will record it in the system.

Members in their 20s and 70s were seen showing their vaccination cards to staff at the 24-hour fitness check-in counter in Pearl City on Monday morning.

Barnavi Smith, Hawaii’s 24-hour fitness district manager, which consists of seven gym locations on Oahu, said he began asking patrons for proof of vaccination or negative test results four days ago. “So far, it’s very good,” Smith said.

“The members were really great. I have to thank them for pointing out that no cluster cases have occurred in any facility since the pandemic in March 2020.” And that’s all. Thanks to our members. The members were great about the whole process. “

Before the Safe Access Oaf program came into effect, he remembered that there was a bit of controversy from people who didn’t believe that mandates were needed. “After all, in 24-hour fitness, our number one priority is to provide a safe working environment for all members, guests and team members,” Smith said.

He said there are many members who have chosen to freeze or cancel their membership due to a pandemic. According to Smith, with the new mission in place, there are former members who have returned to Jim feeling safer than ever, and all need to present evidence of a complete vaccination or negative test result. ..

The Oahu gym operates at 50% capacity to comply with the COVID-19 protocol. For example, indoor group exercise classes are usually limited to 10 people. There is one instructor and nine participants.

The 24-hour fitness gym in Pearl City also has a 25,000-square-foot outdoor area that occupies part of the parking lot and is well-equipped with nearly 100 training equipment.

According to Smith, the outdoor training area is “really cool” because it provides members with options. “Anyone can use the outdoor space, whether or not they are vaccinated.”

The Maui County “Safer Outside” program, similar to the Safe Access Oahu Program, takes effect on Wednesday and is valid for 30 days.

At this time, there are no similar programs for businesses in Hawaii County and Kauai County.

At the YMCA in Waipahu’s Honolulu Leeward branch, Executive Secretary Jen Townsend said he received positive feedback from members, especially young people, about the new mission. “Last week I talked to a few teenagers and asked them what they thought. I was surprised to hear that they liked it. It was a good idea and reassured them. . “

“I didn’t think it was that important to them, but it is,” Townsend said.

Like 24-hour fitness, YMCA launched a program at the facility last week.

At the entrance to the gym at the Leeward branch, about 20 spray bottles containing antiseptic solution that can be used by regular customers were observed before and after using the gym equipment.

Greg Waibel, president and chief executive officer of YMCA in Honolulu, said Jim provides important services to maintain the health and well-being of people. It’s unfair for Jim to be in the same category as bars and restaurants, he added, adding that Jim is essential.

Both Townsend and Waibel want authorities to relax the limit after 60 days if the program is effective in reducing the number of cases.
