Senegal, Dakar —President Macky Sall said 11 newborns were killed in a fire in a newborn ward in a hospital in Senegal. Only three babies were saved.
“I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to their mother and family,” Sall tweeted late Wednesday.
Mayor Demba Diop said the fire broke out due to an electrical short circuit at Abdul Aziz Si Dabak Hospital in Tibauane, a town 75 miles northeast of the capital.
A fatal fire broke out in Linguere, northern Senegal, a year after a hospital fire killed four other newborns.
Other series of deaths have also raised concerns about maternal and child health in West African countries known to have some of the best hospitals in the region.

Earlier this month, authorities discovered that a baby declared dead by a nurse’s aide was still alive in the morgue. The baby died later.
Last year, a pregnant woman died in Luga, in the northern part of the country, after waiting for a Caesarean section in vain. The three midwives were sentenced to a six-month suspended sentence for not helping those at risk.
Health Minister Abdoulaye Diouf Saar, who was attending the World Health Assembly in Geneva, shortened his trip to return to Senegal.
