Return to Sölöz (IndiePix Films DVD)

Composed by French Armenian director Serge Avedikian return NSölöz From footage taken during several visits to his ancestral villages in Turkey. Color films shot in the 1980s and 90s are brilliantly edited into the dark black-and-white scenes of 2019. Their juxtaposition at that time and now is thought-provoking and represents Avedikian’s thinking about time and aging. He met many of the same villagers over the years and often engaged in the painful history of the genocide that expelled Armenians from the village during World War I. Memories of the villagers’ ancestors who were deported from their Greek home after World War I. Return to Sölöz Thoughtful mediation about identity, false stories, and the ability to find common ground. (David Rulesen)

    Deep blues (Filmmovement Classic DVD)

In 1990, Dave Stewart interrupted his tour with Eurythmics and went to Memphis to meet American music authority Robert Palmer. Stewart wanted to record a blues musician that inspired him (long before half of the chart-top pop duo). Also at their conference on Beer Street was the acclaimed music documentary Robert Muge, whose subsequent trekking footage across the country of the blues became a movie. Deep blues..

Stewart is trendy in search of the real thing, and Palmer comes across as a music geek with encyclopedic insights. As they walked together, Palmer ridiculed the “urban redevelopment” that destroyed the original Beer Street (eventually replaced by the tourist Simulakura phenomenon), making Stewart the only wreckage of old beer. I’ll take you. Share your memories with the conquerors. While hiking through the North Mississippi countryside, they find RL Burnside on a loose porch and play intense solo electric blues (he shows Stewart some licks).

Palmer also introduces Stewart to funky Fife and drum bands. Its roots have spread over generations, and its rhythm has helped the birth of the blues. At the juke joint, Junior Kimbrough and the band play jam in a beautiful hypnotic groove. It is almost psychedelic because of its time-consuming electrical strength. And that’s just the beginning of an absorptive investigation into many of the surviving roots of what is now called Americana. (David Rulesen)

I hate games (Limited theater release and streaming on Apple TV, December 10)

The film adaptation of Sally Thorne’s debut novel is a comedy take that has been rated R by the thin lines that separate love and hate. Since their recent merger, Lucy (Lucy Hale) and her enemy Joshua (Austin Stowell) have each continued to work for their CEO in a shared office. Lucy looks down on her rivals. Sitting at desks facing each other, the pair’s daily interactions include staring games, mirror games, and HR games played hard with cruel one-up manship. Therefore, it is quite inconvenient for Lucy to recognize their unmistakable mutual appeal when the two compete for a big promotion. Critics praised Thorne’s keen wit, saying her conversation was reminiscent of the classic Hepburn and Tracy joke. (Lisa Miller)

Westside story (At the theater on December 10th)

This Steven Spielberg remake extends the original script to reveal the character’s motivation. Rachel Zegler depicts Maria, a Puerto Rican girl coated by White Tony (Ansel Elgort). The gang is at war with the Puerto Ricans. Her supporting role and Oscar winner Rita Moreno in the 1961 edition appears as the centerpiece of Valentina, a neighborhood grocery store that sings unexpected transcendental songs. Stunningly colorful costumes and elaborately choreographed numbers, with Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics, only deepen our admiration for Leonard Bernstein’s timeless music. This story is Romeo and Juliet, Unearth the joy and heartache of lovers beyond the stars. (Lisa Miller)
