Facebook Whistleblower Interview: Francis Hogen Testifies in Washington-Live Update | Technology

Senator Richard Blumenthal begins a hearing in the opening statement, Facebook Published by Haugen, he blamed the company for pursuing profits above all else.

He mentioned one of the biggest bombs from the documentation. This is evidence that Facebook knows that its products are harmful to teenagers and uses that algorithm “to amplify anxiety.”

“Their interests were more important than the pain it caused,” he said.

Blumenthal drew similarities between Facebook and Big Tobacco. This is a comparison made by many senators following Haugen’s whistleblower. He said Big Tech is facing that “big tobacco moment.”

“Evidence that Facebook knows that its products can be addictive and toxic to children is documented. They not only made money, but also caused it to children and families. They valued them more than pain, “he said.

“The damage to self-esteem caused by Facebook today plagues generations,” he added. “Feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, rejection, and self-loathing affect this generation for years.”

Facebook has proved that it can do more to address the issue when it changes its content policy over the weeks surrounding the 2020 US presidential election, Haugen said.

At the time, she said, the company intentionally lowered the priority of political content in news feeds. But it quickly reverted to an old algorithm that emphasized engagement over everything else.

“These documents you revealed provided the company with a blueprint for reform and specific recommendations for making Facebook and Instagram more secure,” Blumenthal said.

“The company repeatedly ignored these recommendations from its researchers,” Blumenthal said. “Facebook, as you say, is very powerful in maximizing profits and ignoring pain.”

He submitted a letter from 52 state prosecutors as evidence of the need to hold Facebook accountable.

Blumental also advertised the legislation introduced with Senator Ed Markey. It’s called the KIDS method Regulate Designing a social platform to minimize harm.
