Evidence lacking for T2DM screening in children

Date:

(HealthDay)-The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) concludes that current evidence is inadequate to assess the benefits and harms of type 2 diabetes screening in children and adolescents (I Statement). .. This conclusion forms the basis of the draft recommendation published online by the USPSTF on 14 December.

David E, an evidence-based practice center at the Research Triangle Park at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Jonas, MD and colleagues reviewed the evidence for prediabetes and type 2 child and adolescent screening. Diabetes.. Data were included from eight publications with 856 participants. Researchers have found that none of the studies directly assess the benefits or harms of screening. In one randomized controlled trial, two adolescents recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes developed Renal dysfunction And 11 were developed Diabetic ketoacidosis, No difference between receiving patients Metformin, Metformin and rosiglitazone, or metformin and lifestyle intervention. Regarding the harm caused by the intervention, less than 1% of participants reported major hypoglycemic events. Mild hypoglycemic events were more common with metformin plus rosiglitazone and with metformin or metformin plus lifestyle interventions. One study reported more frequent gastrointestinal adverse effects in people taking metformin and placebo.

Based on these findings, the USPSTF concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance between the benefits and harms of type 2 diabetes screening in children and adolescents. There is no evidence of the impact of screening, early detection, and treatment of type 2 diabetes on health outcomes.

Proposed recommendations and evidence reviews are publicly available for public comments. Comments can be submitted from December 14, 2021 to January 18, 2022.
