Paolo Gentiloni, European Economic Commissioner, Lecture at Forum The European House-Ambrosetti in September 2020.

EU Economic and Tax Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni told CNBC about the need to develop the block at the geopolitical stage as the United States and other Western allies step back.
“We are an economic power, but we cannot completely lack a geopolitical role. This was probably possible in the last century, but now it is not possible,” he said at the European House Ambrosetti Forum on Saturday. I told Steve Sedgwick of CNBC.
Gentiloni named what he called the “terrible” conclusions of the war in Afghanistan in recent weeks, as an example of how the United States and others have reduced their commitment on the global stage. His comments add weight to the argument that the EU should develop a common defense policy. This is considered by many to be a pioneer of the EU military.
