Omaha, Nebraska (KMTV) — Veterans Day is Thursday, but Omaha’s male service and heroism are already in the spotlight. The Douglas County Commission has passed a resolution recognizing the service of Charles Jackson French.

In 1942, the French rescued 15 injured sailors by pulling a rope around their waists for eight hours in the shark-infested waters.

“As stated in the resolution, the French were honored with this, but the fact that the individual of color was not recognized at that moment was one of the many acts of this kind nationwide. “I thought it would be good to talk to the clerk about this, talk to some individuals in the area, and bring it closer to Veterans Day,” said Douglas County Commissioner Chris Rogers.

Earlier this year, all three Nebraska Legislators announced a resolution to rename the Benson Post Office in honor of Charles Jackson French.
