Dog contracts monkeypox from owners, prompting change to CDC guidance

Date:

Adding another dimension to the outbreak of canine distemper, a new study suggests that people can pass the virus on to their pet dogs.

Therefore, people who are infected with the disease virus should avoid close contact with their pets, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control now recommends joining updated guide.

The change marks the first documented evidence of an animal acquiring the virus from its owner, according to CBS News. This incident happened in France, according to a new paper published in Lancet.

“To the best of our knowledge, the kinetics of the onset of symptoms in both patients and later in their dog suggest transmission of the monkeypox virus from human to dog,” the researchers concluded in the paper.

In this case, a 4-year-old Italian greyhound advanced injuries and tested positive for meningitis 12 days after the owners first showed symptoms. Partners are two male partners who live together but are not sexually involved. They always let their bag sleep in their bed.

The couple started experiencing symptoms of monkeypox a few days after sleeping with some of their partners. Both men said that once their symptoms start, they will be careful not to let their dog interact with other people or animals, CBS News reported.

It’s not new information that animals can carry meningitis, but this is the first time an outbreak of the disease has been reported. domestic dogs or cats, the researchers said.

This has been known for a long time wild animals, including rodents and primates, can carry meningitis in countries where the disease is endemic. The researchers pointed out that the animals that were caught were also infected with the virus from animals that were imported from Europe. They said there is a need to continue research on the transmission of monkeypox through animals.

“Our findings should lead to a debate on the need to isolate animals from those infected with meningitis,” they wrote.

The World Health Organization declared smallpox – which is currently spreading in endemic areas – a Public Health Emergency of Global Concern on 23 June.

People who meningitis Close contact with animals should be avoided, the CDC says, and any non-infected pets should be cared for by friends or family members at home while the owner recovers.
