Governor Dewein said that the map of the new district of Senate Bill 258 will create a fair, compact and competitive map compared to other proposals from both the Ohio House and Senate, both Republicans and Democrats. Says the most advanced.
“The SB258 map has fewer county and city divisions than these recent proposals and the current parliamentary map,” DeWine said in a press release on the passage of the bill.
He further explained that the map contained Lucas and Stark counties, as well as the Mahoning Valley, within a single parliamentary district for the first time in decades.
He also says that for the first time since the 1840s, all the cities of Akron, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dayton and Toledo are on the same parliamentary map.
Democrats, electoral groups, and scholars say the map is a gerrymander.
