Deep tech start-ups specializing in optical sensors and edge analysis have partnered with BOEM to open up new ways to discover undersea clean tech resources.

Impossible Sensing, a St. Louis-based deep tech startup specializing in optical sensors and edge analysis, has partnered with the U.S. Department of Interior’s Department of Marine Energy Management (BOEM) to discover new ways to discover clean tech resources on the ocean floor. For the first time, Impossible Sensing’s breakthrough technology, VIPER, brings robotics laboratories to the ocean floor to identify and quantify the location, size, and nature of deposits and communities.

VIPER utilizes Impossible Sensing’s space exploration technology originally developed for NASACompletely map and discover marine minerals in the US Exclusive Economic Zone, while providing important information about sensitive habitats and species. These advances will not only mitigate US strategic vulnerabilities and support a global shift to clean energy, but will also document deep-sea biodiversity.

VIPER is the first cost-effective tool to discover and evaluate marine clean tech resources. “To fulfill that mission, BOEM needs to collect more information on the location and extent of key minerals on the Outer Continental Shelf,” emphasizes geologist Mark Leung, BOEM’s Strategic Resources Agency. “Impossible Sensing’s VIPER technology ultimately breaks the value-cost trade-off by providing the tools needed to map OCS.”

Impossible Sensing and BOEM estimate that a 100 km2 mineral and environmental survey can be completed in days instead of months, without the need to sample. “This is the type of innovative innovation that BOEM and its partners need to advance their ocean exploration goals,” says Leung.
