Cuba said Wednesday that it would seek approval from the World Health Organization for two homemade coronavirus vaccines that it hopes to commercialize widely.

Rolando Perez of the state pharmaceutical group BioCubaFarma said the review process will begin on Thursday as WHO experts investigate the country’s Abdala and Soberana 02 jabs.

According to Perez, experts said the vaccine was “safe, immunogenic (” vaccination provoke Immune response) And effectiveness. “

Cuba’s WHO representative Jose Moya told AFP that there will be a “first virtual meeting” between experts in Havana, Genova and Washington on Thursday.

Cuba uses domestic vaccines in its COVID-19 vaccination campaign, including children.

The first vaccine developed in Latin America has not yet undergone international scientific peer review.

They are based on the same recombinant protein technology used in Novavax in the United States and Sanofi jab in France.

Unlike many other shots used, recombinant vaccines do not require extreme refrigeration.

Perez said Cuba’s ability to sell vaccines to other countries is a decision of the national health authorities and does not rely on WHO approval.

However, it will “promote (vaccine) entry into markets in other countries once the island’s needs are met.”

Several countries, including Argentina and Mexico, have shown interest in acquiring Cuban jabs, Venezuela has already signed a purchase agreement, and Iran is producing Soberana 02 in its own country.

Under American sanctions since 1962, Communist Cuba has a long tradition of making its own vaccines, dating back to the 1980s.

Almost 80 percent of the inoculation is locally produced.

Cuban scientists say Abdala and Soberana 02 jabs have been shown to be more than 90% effective in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 cases.

The 11.2 million islands are fully vaccinated to about 38.5% of the population, which also uses China’s Sinopharm vaccination.

The country registered 768,497 COVID cases and 6,523 deaths.
