Between soaring prices and lack of inventory, consumers have been through a lot over the last few years.

“It’s going to be a tough market for real estate and cars,” said auto shopper Robert Blount.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the automotive industry. In fact, car sales and repairs were the largest category of complaints in 2021.

The Consumer Federation of America says that the auto industry has held the top spot for six years, and that “vehicle sales and repairs have clearly been a perennial problem.”

An overheating domestic housing market and tight rental conditions have also led to many complaints.

“He asked me to get him a gift card,” said Joseph Bellas, a home fraud victim. “He asked me to send him money. I told him to take a picture of the front and back and the receipt and send it to him.”

In South Florida, Bellas sent a fake landlord $4,000 to secure a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home for rent. His interpreter tried to help.

“I called the company, which is no longer in business,” said Amy Hare, an ASL interpreter.

Other top categories on the complaint list include home improvement repairs, retail purchases, and consumer debt and credit.

In total, consumer advocacy groups have collected 208,000 complaints in 2021. This is slightly down from the previous year.

They secured more than $119 million in relief for consumers, which is also less than in 2020.
