CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The State Commission on Judicial Action voted Thursday to dismiss the complaint against 214th District Court Judge Ina Klein.

Complaint stemmed from allegations seen by Klein and others Jury deliberation by monitoring system in her court manager’s office.

The identity of the individual or entity making the complaint is unknown. That information is confidential.

A letter from the committee issued on Friday said, “After a thorough review, as required by the Commission’s Procedural Act, the Commission decided to address concerns over the recording of jury deliberations. We have decided to dismiss the complaint based on the corrective actions you have taken.”

The COVID-19 protocol introduced in Nueces County Court required jurors to be heard in court.

When Klein realized surveillance systems were recording jurors, he consulted several divisions of the court to determine how to turn the systems off, according to documents obtained by KRIS 6 News.

In an email to Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales on November 15, 2021, Klein said, “We are aware that jurors are deliberating in district court after the trial in accordance with local COVID-19 protocol. However, after repeated attempts to ascertain who maintains and operates the system, we have been unable to identify the entity responsible for the possibility of recording. However, the IT department told me that the sheriff’s office maintains the system. Done. At this point, we still don’t know who is doing it.We don’t even know if anyone actually does.Where it’s stored and if so for how long? record. The deliberations were also caught on surveillance cameras in the courtroom. Both situations have their problems. “

Klein then notified 319th District Court Judge David Stith and requested that other judges be notified.

“Today I learned that everything said in court may be recorded. It also means that it could also be recorded. As many courts are resuming jury trials, I believe we need to hold an urgent meeting to address this issue.”
