Cochise County ready for state help securing the border – Tucson, Arizona

Tucson, Arizona 2022-01-13 00:32:54 –

Cochise County, Arizona (KGUN) — One of Governor Doug Duchy’s priorities in the Governor’s discourse was to secure the southern border.

Ducey said the state budget would include more money to support local governments. That was welcome news for Cochise County Sheriff Mark Danels.

“Our border-related issues continue to escalate,” Dannels said. “I talked to the governor yesterday. He sees the urgency of what’s happening here.”

Dannels said he used 92% of his overtime budget in the first six months of the fiscal year.

“I can’t remember what happened,” said Dunnels. “This is the economic impact of unsafe borders.”

He said this was mainly due to the increase in border crossings.

“Our pursuit is on the way,” said Dunnels. “They continue to rise, which puts my citizens at risk.”

In the next budget, Dannels said he expects to receive more than $ 5 million used for border-related public security issues. Dannels met with Governor Ducey on Tuesday to discuss where some of the money would go.

“One of our goals is to set up a border operations center here in Cochise County,” says Dannels. “This Intel Center covers the entire southern border, not just Cochise County. There is no such border operations center anywhere on the southwestern border.”

He hopes this helps the number of people they pass through.

“In 2021, 43,000 illegal people were seen on cameras at the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, 39% working with CBP and my Border Protection, and 61% fled,” said Danels. .. “This only shows the dynamics of what we are dealing with here. It’s a complete challenge.”

Dannels is seeking further help from the federal government. He recently spoke with Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mallorcas. He said the federal government would complete part of the border wall.

“They’re going in and fixing what needs to be fixed,” Dunnels said. “No more additions.”

Dannels added that this would help his agent.

“They just went back and concluded that the former president had begun, so that the border guards and my agents could go down the road, their gates, their openings, their gaps, and the roads. I’m trying to close it, “Dunnels said. “It’s a year late, so I’m excited to hear it.”

Dannels also called for a step in the right direction. He said there is no project schedule yet, but it should be faster than slower.
