Climate change activists are being killed in an attempt to save our planet. There is a way to help | Bill McKibben

EEvery year we learn more about the climate crisis. Data flow: constantly rising heat, Unprecedented deforestation, record rainfall.. And once a year, we also learn about the impact of the crisis on humans. Data on the killings of land and environmental activists have been released, and exactly people are protesting with a focus on the collapse of our climate. By 2020, that number had risen to a record high of 227 killings worldwide.

Every time, the data hits me to hit my face. I’ve spent much of my life as an environmental activist and journalist, so if I hadn’t actually met the people on this list sadly, I would have met hundreds of people just like them. Strong locals who are attached to the place and community and play a role in protecting the terrain and the territory of their ancestors. All such people around the world are at risk.

And, in the end, they aren’t too at risk because of another local who pulls the trigger or thrusts the blade. They are at risk because they find themselves living on or near something that a company requires.favorite Fikile NtshangaseSouth African grandmother, who was shot dead at her home last year, leading a vigorous campaign against a coal mine in KwaZulu-Natal.or Oscar Airo AdamsIndigenous activists have argued for community water rights as authorities denied water rights and granted more permits to businesses during the worst drought in 30 years in Mexico. Oscar was shot dead in Tecate last September.

The demand for the highest possible profit, the fastest timeline possible, and the cheapest possible operation seems to ultimately lead to the understanding that the troublemaker must go. Responsibility rarely returns to the company’s headquarters. But it should. In particular, colonialism remains even when dressed up with a corporate logo or hidden in an offshore bank account, as people living in these places never actually share the wealth generated there. It’s powerful.

On the other hand, the rest of us need to be aware that those killed each year to protect their local location also protect our shared planet, especially our climate. Carbon-filling activities in our atmosphere, such as fossil fuel extraction and deforestation, are at the heart of many of these killings. When people stand up to block new plantations scheduled for pipelines, illegal mines, or old forests, they also get in the way of activities that threaten us all. They make life difficult for oil companies and barons of timber, and in doing so strive to protect us all from constant temperature rise.

And when trying to stop the rise by moving to better technologies such as solar panels and electric cars, we need to do so in a way that doesn’t produce the same kind of sad saga – Cobalt mining Also Lithium production It can also be exploited. If we take it seriously Global witness According to the report, these emerging industries should be better designed.

Great respect comes from those working on the development of corporate codes of conduct, industry-wide standards, or government regulations. These are tools that help rebalance power so that people can confront exploiters without fear of being killed. ..But because we live in the world Greenwashing Is a constant threat. Let’s be clear. The value of these norms, standards and regulations is not the word itself, nor is the sponsor proudly promised. Their value is fully measured in the results, including reducing the threat to land and environmental advocates.

What does the climate crisis look like? Some people want to pick up this annual report one year and find out that the answer to that question is “decrease in murder.” The violence is on the decline dramatically and the death toll is beginning to decline. It would be as satisfying as seeing a decline in Covid cases in the spring. It may take years before it happens, as there is no vaccine for the desires of the wealthy. But we can still speed up the day. Armed with the story of lost life, you and I can put enough pressure on the criminals and feel they need to change.

None of them will regain their defenders of the killed planet. It’s frustrating to have to fight just to get leaders to pay attention to science, but there is a big difference between fighting and dying. The names of these activists should be in our lips and mind. We owe them unpaid debts – they are only prepaid.
