    Chinese spy convicted in aviation spy case

    The first Chinese intelligence officer handed over to the United States was convicted of trying to lure industry experts into China and steal trade secrets from aviation.

    According to the Justice Department, a federal jury in Ohio has convicted Yanjun Xu, who worked for the Chinese Department of Homeland Security, for trying to collusion and commit trade secret theft with an economic spy.

    Among the trade secrets Xu tried to steal on behalf of China was technology related to GE Aviation’s compound aircraft engine fans. It has not been duplicated by any other company in the world.

    Prosectors said he had paid industry experts to travel to China, pretending to give a college presentation on their subject, since at least December 2013.

    Operated under Alias, Xu targets US and international aviation professionals, including GE Aviation engineers in Cincinnati, Ohio. The engineer visited China in May 2017 to give a presentation and met Xu. Xu paid the employee’s travel expenses and benefits. A GE engineer who hasn’t worked for the company and hasn’t been charged with a crime brought in confidential company documents. According to WCPO, Cited the sealed FBI affidavit.

    According to the Justice Department, Xu later asked the engineer to send more information about the company, but by that time the engineer had worked with the FBI to lure Xu to Belgium and was arrested in April 2018.

    Xu faces up to 60 years in prison. No judgment date has been set.
