    The first map of how proteins interact in cancer highlights previously overlooked mutations that may be the target of treatment.

    “We are looking for a community of proteins that are being pressured to mutate during cancer,” says Ideker.

    For head and neck cancer, the team discovered 771 protein interactions involving about 650 proteins, and 84% of the interactions had never been reported. If these interactions are important for tumor growth, future tumor drugs that target and destroy them can slow cancer growth.

    Meanwhile, looking at the overall data, the team discovered a mutation in the protein collagen that was overlooked in previous studies.

    “This is a big step forward in research,” says Ideker. “There has been anecdotes about finding cancer mutations this way, but no one has systematically shown this.”

    Ideker hopes that this method will be used in other cancers and that others will participate in the quest to map more protein interactions in cancer. Not only does this help scientists find new drugs, but it also helps scientists find new cancer biomarkers. This helps doctors devise more personalized treatments.
