Can Congress do anything to fix insulin prices? – Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky

    Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky 2022-01-13 05:00:18 –

Kathy Sego knows the frustration of having to pay hundreds of dollars a month for insulin.

Her 25-year-old son, Hunter, has diabetes.

The average cost of a hunter’s insulin vial is about $ 350.

“When the hunters started taking insulin, it was somewhere between $ 90 and $ 100 per vial,” Kathy said. Nationally, insulin prices have more than tripled in the last 20 years.

Hunters need at least 3 vials a month.

Insulin money will come out of Kathy’s wallet until you meet your insurance deduction.

Cathy secures a monthly salary of $ 800 a month for insulin payments. She also takes a vacation to go to a country where insulin is cheap.

“We traveled to Canada,” she said.

When her son learned how expensive insulin was a few years ago, he tried to distribute it and endangered his health.

“He felt very guilty about the cost of living,” Kathy said.

    Dealing with costs

The high cost of insulin is not necessarily new, but efforts to limit costs are a fairly new priority.

In recent years, 20 states and the District of Columbia have taken steps to reduce the cost of insulin.

Colorado was the first state to limit out-of-pocket costs to $ 100 per month.

Sego lives in Indiana, where there is no such law. That’s why she wants Congress to intervene.

    Stalled effort

Efforts have been made to limit insulin prices in the Buildback Better Bill, but the law is at a standstill.

“We have worked a lot on Congressmen,” said Lisa Murdoch of the American Diabetes Association. She says insulin users shouldn’t lose hope.

Plans to limit insulin costs to $ 35 per month nationwide are still under negotiation. She still believes it could pass this year.

“By last month, the American Diabetes Association had produced more than 21,000 outreach to Congress,” Murdoch said.

As for Kathy, she wants something to change soon. Meanwhile, she is planning her next trip abroad.

“We need to understand when we can cross the border,” she said.
