California law requires gender-neutral area in some stores

Sacramento, California (AP) —California was the first state to require large department stores to display products such as toys and toothbrushes in a gender-neutral way.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed the law on Saturday. It does not outlaw the traditional boys and girls section of a department store. Instead, it states that large stores also need a gender-neutral section.

This section should display toys and childcare products such as hygiene products and tooth-growth products. Does not apply to clothing.

This law applies only to retailers with more than 500 employees. This is the third time a Democrat in the state legislature has tried to pass the law.
