Los Angeles (AP) — Authorities say it may take months to fully assess the damage, but a wildfire in Northern California may have killed hundreds of giant sequoias.
According to officials, a fire in the KNP complex last month destroyed 15 orchards in Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park.
An official report on Friday morning reported that the wildfire had burned 85,952 acres. Contains 11%.
Over 2,000 firefighters are fighting the flames.
According to the National Forest Department, four people working on the fire were injured when a tree fell on Wednesday. Forest officials say they were released from the hospital after being seriously injured and airlifted.
One of the four injured crew members is a CALFIRE employee. The other three are Corps members of California Conservation Corps.
The areas of Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park are closed on the west side of the Pacific Crest Trail and on the south side of the northern ridge of Ionian Basin. Most of the Sequoia National Forest is also closed.
