Clean energy is part of our focus on building a better Bay Area. ABC7 news reporter David Louie looks at the battle for the future of solar power in California.
For years, homeowners had financial incentives to install rooftop solar. Credits are given for energy that does not need to be exported to the power grid. It reduces their electricity bill. In addition, 1.3 million solar power systems have been installed throughout the state.
However, the Public Utility Commission of the state is considering a program called Net Energy Metering. It caused a battle between a very rare alliance and very graphic lobbying.
“We can reform to continue growing rooftop solar power in California, which is good,” says Kathy Fairbanks. “We all support it, and we can reform it to be more equitable and equitable so that people in disadvantaged areas are not burdened.”
Fairbanks represents the Affordable Clean Energy for All, a coalition of consumer, senior, social justice and business groups known to plunge into the utility giants.
However, PG & E, Southern California Edison, and San Diego Gas & Electric are part of the coalition. They claim that poor people are subsidizing wealthy homeowners who get credit for solar energy. And if they are renters, the poor cannot set up the sun.
Many other groups provide recommendations to state regulators when evaluating program revisions. The PV industry is also weighing heavily, fearing that reforms can be detrimental when the focus is on clean energy.
“If it costs more to do that, no one is going to solar. Nobody,” said Bernadette Del Chiaro of the California Solar & Storage Association. “And we will lose tens of thousands of jobs, we will lose hundreds of businesses, and we will have no relief from power outages, wildfires, and rising rates.”
The Public Utility Commission of California will publish its recommendations in December.
