    Wise CEO Kristo Käämann was fined after being late for filing an individual tax return during the 2017/18 tax year.

    A HMRC spokesman said, “We can publish the names of people punished in civil proceedings for deliberately defaulting on certain tax obligations,” without commenting on the details of Carman’s case.

    “This is about influencing behavior by encouraging defaulters to get involved with HM Revenue and Customs.”

    A spokesman for Käärmann told CNBC that an Estonian-born billionaire “has spent more time organizing his personal caretaker ever since.”

    “Christo has been delayed in filing his personal tax return for the 2017/18 tax year, despite sufficient reminders from HMRC,” a spokesman said.

    “His tax return has since been completed and he has paid a considerable late filing penalty.”

    Founded in 2011 by Käärmann and Estonian entrepreneur Taavet Hinrikus, Wise is now considered the darling of the British tech scene.

    The money transfer company, formerly known as Transfer Wise, made its debut in the blockbuster market in July and was worth more than £ 8 billion.

    Since then, the company’s share price has continued to rise, rising by nearly 40%. At Wise’s current stock price, Carman is worth about £ 2.1 billion on paper.

    News of tax breaches weighed heavily on Wise shares on Tuesday. Stocks finally fell about 3%.

    According to The Telegraph, Käärmann’s tax defaults can violate the UK’s rule that public company directors must be freed from conflicts between their employer obligations and private matters.

    The Financial Conduct Authority can also revoke executive approval to perform their role if they do not follow standards of honesty, the newspaper said.

    “I can’t comment on individual companies, but I’m considering this kind of information in my ongoing oversight,” an FCA spokesman told CNBC.
