At Alcatraz Island, Haaland highlights Indigenous progress

San Francisco (AP) — US Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland says progress has been made by indigenous peoples.

However, when she visited Alcatraz on Saturday, she added, it became a symbol of indigenous suicide struggles after being acquired in the 1960s.

Harland visited the island on the 52nd anniversary of the occupation by indigenous students, who had demanded that the US government grant a long-standing agreement with the tribe.

Harland, from Laguna Pueblo, New Mexico, says the actions of these activists have helped Native Americans no longer have to resort to extreme means.
