AMC Matador, Medium, Large, Personal (Part I)

The American Motors Matador line did a lot for many from 1971 to 1978. Manufactured domestically and internationally, Matador occupies multiple sizes of classes, a wide range of prices, and has been wearing fashionable luxury clothing for some time. .. Come with us while exploring the world of matadors.

Like most “new” AMC vehicles, the Matador wasn’t a new car at the time of the 1971 model’s debut.Below that was an updated and renamed version of AMC traitor (1967-1970). The new identity of the model was part of a socially conscious strategic change. In the late 1960s, there was a significant amount of social unrest and riots across the United States, and AMC management decided that their car wasn’t the best idea. Back rebel. Marketing scientists conducted a survey and eventually used a consumer clinic to choose a new, more acceptable name, Matador. Consumers in the United States thought the word was stimulating and fearless. Hey, whatever you go to. The name of the matador did not spread in the Puerto Rican market either. In the Puerto Rican market, the term was strongly associated with murder and bullfighting.

n 1972 AMC Full Line 01Considered a medium size (then called a medium size), the ’71 Matador shared a platform with AMC’s full-size ambassadors. The Matador’s wheelbase was slightly shorter, 118 inches above the Ambassador’s 122. The total length of the matador was 205 inches for the wagon and 206 inches for the coupe and sedan, but the ambassador was expanded to 210.8 inches by 1971 and 212.8 inches in 1973.

Available body styles included a 2-door hardtop coupe and a 4-door version as a sedan and wagon. The wagon was a group of shorts, but it was an additional 3 inches tall. 56.4 inches compared to 53.8 for the other two body styles. Many of the 1971 trims were carried over from the rambler, and knowledgeable buyers will find that almost every chrome was a 1970 decoration. That year, the bumpers, headlamps, dashboards and gauges were new.

19105 1971 amc matador 4 door sedan flickr photo sharingAMC, like most models, offered a variety of engines in the first Matador. The smallest in the group was a 232 cubic inch (3.8L) in-line 6-cylinder engine, and one of the standard equipment on the wagon was a 258 (4.2L) in-line 6-cylinder engine. The other three engines were V8 engines with displacements of 304 (5.0L), 360 (5.9L), and 401 (6.6L). The transmission was different in 1971, unlike the other two production years of the first generation. In the year of its debut, there was a 4-speed manual (floor), a 3-speed manual (tree), or a 3-speed shift command automatic. For the next two years, I used either 3-speed manual or 3-speed torque command auto. The latter was a rebranding of Chrysler’s TorqueFlite after AMC replaced the Shift-Command supplied by BorgWarner.

The first Matador lineup was specifically aimed at buyers of medium-sized family cars. AMC also sold many Matadors as fleet vehicles, and the 4-door version was used for commercial applications and taxis. US government agencies and police also liked Matador. Their powerful V8 engine has the potential to outperform most standard vehicles of the time. The rugged police package Matador was offered before it was discontinued in 1971-1975 and was most often equipped with a 360 V8.

n 1972 AMC Full Line 20 21The option for the wagon version is a rear-facing third-row seat, increasing the number of seats from six to eight. The tailgate of the wagon was bidirectional. It opened as a standard barn door or collapsed like a tailgate when the rear window was dropped. There was also an option for the new MachineGo equipment package. Label The Machine.. Muscle cars were withdrawn by 1971 as emissions and unleaded gasoline combined with sudden premiums made them less attractive. The Machine Go was an option rather than a proprietary model like the Rebel The Machine and was only offered on a two-door hardtop. Performance pieces were either included in the Machine Go package or available, but the flashy American theme of the previous year was “muscle car” in appearance and wasn’t offered. Not a popular package, only 50 Machine Gos were sold in 1971.

The grill was simplified, but in 1972 the visual changes were limited. With the removal of trunk and rear-end chrome from the 1970s rebels, cars have less bling this year. The rear lamp was new, but the gauge retreated to that of the 1967 rebels. After tuning with three V8s, different output levels became available in 1972. Horsepower numbers were rated as 150, 175, 195, 220, or 255. In particular, the V8 engine mandated a 3-speed automatic transmission. Marketing has changed this year as AMC introduced a new buyer protection plan in response to changing consumer preferences. The first BPP for all automakers was a 12 month factory, 12,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. AMC promised to repair the car’s breakdown other than the tires, gave it a toll-free warranty number, and provided it to the dealer’s lender for nighttime repairs.

n 1972 AMC Full Line 02 03To reduce new comprehensive warranty claims, AMC has begun to improve factory production quality at Kenosha and reduce the number of different models as a whole, aiming to be a better parts supplier. Standard equipment has been increased to improve rationalization efforts. Warranties and other changes pleased dealers who were able to use BPP as a sales tool to make AMC stand out from other manufacturers. In the second year, AMC moved 7,306 matador coupes, 10,448 wagons, and 36,899 sedans.

1973 was the last for the first generation Matador, and evidence of the rationalization that took place in 1972 emerged. In 1973, all three body styles were available in one trim, which was more equipped than before. Visually noteworthy is that all ’73 models comply with the new NHTSA 5mph bumper regulations. The bumper is thicker, more substantive and has won the front rubber shock absorber. At the rear, the optional chrome-plated bumper guard in 1972 became rubber and became standard in 1973. Once again, the grille and tail lamps have been revised for an annual refreshment. One of the last signs of the rebellion history, the Bullseye logo on the horn pad disappeared in 1973. This year, the wagon got a new vinyl upholstery called Uganda. By this time almost all I6 powered matadors had an automatic transmission, as the station wagon was the only one built with an in-line 6-cylinder and a manual transmission.

19105 1971 amc matador 4 door sedan flickr photo sharingMarketing took a more lacy edge in 1973 when AMC sent Matador to NASCAR. The two-door hardtop was driven by Mark Donohue (1937-1975). In January 1973, Racing Matador lapped all the cars in the race and won the Cup Series. I won the Winston Western 500 again. Meanwhile, AMC monitored ownership investigations to see if changes since the rebels made a difference. They had, and Popular mechanics The owners of the Matador in 1973 showed that they were happier and less problematic than the owners of the 1970 Rebels.

However, NASCAR and a good consumer experience weren’t enough, and a review of the day showed that while AMC’s products were where they should be, consumer awareness wasn’t.As proof, the two-door Matador hardtop was the brand’s worst-selling model, but such body styles are usually Most popular, The most profitable product in the midsize car market of the day. After three years (refreshing), it’s time to rethink Matador. In particular, AMC wanted to pay more attention to the Matador Coupe. See Part II for more information.
