Tokyo >> A major earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck the metropolitan area late today, injuring more than 30 people, damaging groundwater pipes, and stopping trains and subways.

Local trains were delayed, commuters flooded the station, and traffic turmoil continued overnight.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquakes are concentrated in the eastern part of Tokyo, about 80 kilometers (48 miles) deep in Chiba prefecture. There was no danger of a tsunami.

The building shook, and things such as signboards shook violently. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said there were no abnormalities in the nuclear facilities in the area.

Most trains operated on Friday morning, but there were significant delays and admission restrictions to avoid congestion. There was a long queue outside Tokyo’s Shinjuku station, and Kawaguchi station was flooded with hundreds of morning commuters.

According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, the quake injured 32 people, three of whom were seriously injured.

The Chiba Prefectural Police said 11 people were injured and two women who were elsewhere during the quake had sprained their ankles. According to the Disaster Management Agency, a commuter train that stopped urgently in eastern Tokyo was partially derailed, causing three passengers to fall and suffer minor injuries.

Fire officials said groundwater pipes were damaged in dozens of locations in Tokyo. In one district, water was gushing from the ground.

New Prime Minister Fumio Kishida posted a message on Twitter urging him to “check for the latest information and take action to save his life.” He said it was the strongest shake in Tokyo since March 2011.

Mr Kishida returned to the office tonight to lead the government’s response.
