2022 New features of Subaru WRX
The WRX has adopted a new design for 2022, and the faster WRX STI is waiting for the same treatment. Additional changes include a larger turbo 4 engine, a revised CVT with faster shifts, a new GT model with adaptive dampers, and more standard convenience and safety features.
As always, the WRX design is based on the Impreza compact sedan. The look is an evolution of the final design, except for the dark cladding around the wheel cutout. The fender haunch is clearer, the rear diffuser is larger, has more creases, and the front grille extends wider under a prominent hood scoop. Dimensions aren’t available yet, but Subaru says it’s slightly longer, lower, and wider than the 2022 model’s outing car.
Inside, the cabin is dominated by a large vertical 11.6-inch central touchscreen inside a shield-like bezel. The small-diameter flat-bottomed steering wheel, metal pedals, and dark shades add a sporty touch to the interior.
The 2022 Subaru WRX uses the more robust Subaru Global Platform that underpins everything but the BRZ. The 2.0-liter Turbo 4 will replace the 2.4-liter Turbo 4, which debuted in the Ascent full-size SUV. It rotates with a torque of 271hp and 258lb-ft. Although only three horsepower higher than last year, Subaru says it is more responsive than the output engine due to the added displacement and the addition of a new wastegate and turbocharged air bypass valve.
The Turbo 4 is backed by a choice of two transmissions, a 6-speed manual, or a CVT that the company calls the Subaru Performance Transmission (SPT). This year, the CVT lowered the gear ratio to improve responsiveness. Subaru says that upshifts are 30% faster and downshifts are 50% faster. The CVT features rev matching that is active even in downshifts, and Subaru has installed a new oil cooler on all models except the base model to improve truck performance. Power is supplied to all four wheels with torque vectoring on the rear axle.
The adaptive damper is the first of the WRX and is standard equipment on the GT. The GT also comes with a significantly enhanced Recaro front bucket, matt gray wheels, and a CVT as the only transmission option.
The CVT won’t be much fun to drive, but it has more safety features. These consist of adaptive cruise control, active lane control, automatic emergency braking and a blind spot monitor. The manual model only comes with a blind spot monitor. Subaru also provides an automatic emergency steering system to avoid objects when traveling at speeds below 50 mph.
How much does the 2022 Subaru WRX cost?
GT models join the base model, premium model, and limited model. Subaru has not announced prices or standard equipment. We know that the base model comes with a center touch screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 60/40 split foldable rear seat, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
