Rivian defeated all of Detroit’s major automakers to bring it to market in the half-ton segment, but it wasn’t the margin that startups probably wanted. Disclaimer: Before jumping into this, I did my best to validate the specifications provided, but I would like to note that Rivian is brand new and others are still in the prototype stage. Some of these numbers may be inaccurate or simply changed before manufacture. This is all fictitious until you can actually cross-shop them anyway, right? How nice. End the disclaimer.
Let’s start with the powertrain. All of these are battery-powered electric trucks designed with a modular rear-wheel drive configuration designed to accommodate up to four electric drive units. Rivian actually takes full advantage of this with a quad motor setup that produces 835 horsepower and 908 lb-ft of torque on early high-power models. GMC 3 motors Hummer It has an R1T beat with an estimated 1,000 horsepower output, but Ford (also a 3-motor) comes with a much more modest 563 horses. This is a good example of the above points that they are not all designed for the same crowd.Ford F-150Offering at a lower price, means that it will be much more mainstream, as its output suggests.
This theme continues when you look at the dimensions. The image of “Hummer” may come to mind, but GMC’s entry actually requires the shallowest parking space. Rivian is just behind it, and the work-track Ford stretches more than a foot longer than either. If the hummer is lacking in length, it will be supplemented by the waistline. It’s a good 5 inch and widest. The Rivian is slightly chunkier than the F-150, but much closer at that end of the scale.
Sadly, we don’t know enough about these trucks, so we can’t really guess where everything sways in terms of weight and handling. Rivian is certainly heavy at around 7,280 pounds, but neither Ford nor GMC have promised a final weight figure. Lightning has been suggested to be about 1,000 pounds heavier than the F-150’s EcoBoost model, or about 6,500 pounds in total, which is certainly in the stadium. On the other hand, Hummer Weighs over 9,000 pounds confirmed, Surprisingly heavy.
Inside, Hummer offers the most spacious front seats, especially for those with long legs and torso. Wide shoulders and hips seem to be Ford’s ideal customer, and Rivian lifts the rear straight across the board. All three trucks have a drivetrain architecture that allows for a very spacious cab, so there is no compromise when it comes to petrol cousins.
As mentioned above, these are 3 different tracks for 3 different buyers. I don’t know which formula resonates the most, but in this truck-hungry market, each one is likely to find its niche.
