2022 OEKO-TEX® Innovation is the new Impact Calculator

The most important OEKO-TEX® innovation in 2022 is the new Impact Calculator for the textile and leather industry. With the new Impact Calculator, you can identify the maximum impact of CO at individual production sites.2 Emissions and water consumption, take steps to reach reduction targets, and share carbon and water footprint data with customers, investors, business partners and other stakeholders.

The new Impact Calculator is now available on STeP for OEKO-TEX® customers. Industry-specific tools provide the carbon and water footprint data essential to achieving climate goals. In late 2022, OEKO-TEX® will also introduce RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS by OEKO-TEX®, a new certification of due diligence for enterprises.

The OEKO-TEX® Association has also released an annual update on test criteria, limits, and certification requirements. All new regulations will come into effect after the transition period of April 1, 2022.

With the new Impact Calculator, individual production sites can identify the greatest impact of CO2 emissions and water consumption, take steps to meet reduction targets, and share carbon and water footprint data.

Climate change – the industry’s most urgent challenge

At the 2021 World Climate Conference in Glasgow, textile industry representatives presented a more ambitious version of the United Nations Fashion Industry Charter on Climate Behavior. In the updated Charter, more than 130 participating companies have pledged their commitment to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. This is the goal of the Paris Climate Agreement. Next, the textile industry has set a goal of reducing carbon emissions by at least 30% by 2030. Manufacturing processes that consume large amounts of carbon and water in the textile industry have great potential for improvement, but large-scale challenges require action that goes beyond voluntary action. Initiative.

    OEKO-TEX® supports action

To reach the industry’s 2030 goals, companies need reliable data. To facilitate progress and data interchange along the global supply chain, OEKO-TEX® has launched the Impact Calculator. This tool measures the carbon and water footprint of each process step, entire process, and 1 kilogram of material / product.

“Transparency is a decisive factor in measuring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption in the supply chain,” explains Georg Dieners, OEKO-TEX® Executive Director. “Providing concrete solutions to industry challenges is the guiding principle behind OEKO-TEX®’s 30-year commitment to enterprises and consumers. OEKO-TEX® allows our customers to address the environment and society. We continue to develop scientific solutions and digital systems to manage processes from an impact perspective. CO embedding standards2 Emissions and water consumption are logical steps to further increase transparency. “

    Lifecycle assessment solution

Recognizing the need for action, OEKO-TEX® began developing life cycle assessment tools in 2020. Both carbon footprint and water footprint calculations are now integrated into STeP with OEKO-TEX® facility certification. Therefore, this certification allows individual facilities to:

-Identify the materials used or produced, and the maximum carbon and water impact of the production process.

-Take steps to improve operations and achieve reduction targets.

-Share carbon dioxide emissions and water footprint data with customers, investors, business partners and other stakeholders.

STeP certification is a prerequisite for obtaining the MADEING REEN by OEKO-TEX® product label. Implementation of footprint calculation data for consumer communication is planned for future steps towards transparency.

New certification for brands and retailers: Responsible business with OEKO-TEX®

In mid-2022, the association will introduce RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS with OEKO-TEX®. This is a new certification for brands and retailers working on international agreements on human rights and environmental protection. OEKO-TEX® aims to help companies fulfill their due diligence obligations within their businesses and global supply chains. Responsible business under OEKO-TEX® was developed in accordance with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the relevant OECD Guidelines on Responsible Business Behavior.

Traceable sustainability labels for textiles and leather products once again recorded the strongest growth within the OEKO-TEX® portfolio. Compared to the previous year, the number of MADE IN GREEN label holders increased by 55% (as of December 31, 2021). Home textiles continue to occupy the top spot in the strongest category (bedding increased 80% year-on-year), but are currently moving, especially in the apparel category. Workwear and protective clothing recorded the largest growth, up 156% year-on-year. This reveals how rapidly the demand for products manufactured in a sustainable manner is growing in all textile products sectors.

    New and updated limits

OEKO-TEX® has added bisphenol B (BPB) to STANDARD 100, LEATHER STANDARD, ECO PASSPORT with OEKO-TEX® certification, and STeP with OEKO-TEX® MRSL. The same applies to two additional colorants based on Michler’s ketone / base.

    New substance under observation

In 2022, OEKO-TEX® will continue to monitor a variety of substances based on the latest scientific discoveries and compliance with relevant specifications. This is mainly related to some process preservatives and bisphenol F, S, AF.
