You’ve probably seen them, especially if you live in a big city. A tricycle that straddles the border between a car and a motorcycle. Often, they travel in packs and are mainly driven by men in their 30s and 40s.

Sex toys of a non-sexual kind.

Can-Am spider. Morgan 3Wheeler. And Polaris Slingshot. I was lent one of the latter last year.

Technically speaking, these vehicles are considered motorcycles in most states, but the Slingshot is relatively car-like, at least when compared to Spyder. It has a steering wheel instead of a handlebar, a foot pedal, a center stack for radio control, and a gear shifter that any car will have at home. In fact, without doors and without three wheels instead of four, the Slingshot looks more like a convertible in a lower sports car than a bike.

Indeed, I thought the experience of driving it would be much stranger than it turned out to be. I thought I needed to learn new controls, or at least make major adjustments to how I drive, to drive a slingshot, but that wasn’t the case. Instead, I had an old-fashioned and unsurprising elemental experience.

Let’s start with steering. Polaris lists it as variable speed sensitive electronic support, but sometimes feels heavy. As heavy as manual steering, especially at low speeds. It certainly didn’t have the artificial feel of many steering systems these days. It felt natural and accurate, usually in a way related to go-karting.

The clutches and shifters of a 5-speed manual transmission have an old-fashioned feel as well-the phrase is again-feel. It’s all very mechanical, jusssst A little notch from the gear shift.

Some might speculate that a low and lightweight car / motorcycle (car-a-cycle?) On the ground is the best way to drive. The turn-in is surprisingly immediate and the problem goes where it points out. Minor corner center corrections may be required and are easy to do.

Braking is just as fast and the pedals are responsive.

Power is supplied by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 203 horsepower and 144 lb-ft of torque. It’s certainly not a stunning number, but the Slingshot is so lightweight (only 1,645 pounds) that you don’t have to growl too much. The slingshot feels very fast. 0-60 mph is displayed in 4.9 seconds, but you need to wind it up to get peak power. The peak torque hits at 6,500 rpm and the peak horsepower should go north of 8 grounds.

Lowland tricycles (the rear wheels that are driven are attached via a swingarm) cannot ride softly and the slingshot is naturally rigid.

It’s also noisy, which is also predictable. There’s engine noise, road noise, and wind noise, but the cockpit is like a casino, so it’s not filtered. Always open. With no roofs or doors, a small windshield, and few silencers, the Slingshot experience isn’t quiet.

DSC0216 10In some states, the Slingshot had to be registered as a motorcycle, and Polaris politely asked me and the passengers traveling with me to wear a full-face helmet. They lent me one for my passengers (I have two full-face helmets that have been doing this gig for years).

A few months ago I had this slingshot when the weather was still warm. It goes without saying that without a roof, you cannot protect yourself from the rain. Slightly protected from theft – there is a lockable storage space behind the seat and glove box locks. The glove box lock stopped working on some of my loans and remained open. Valuables were not left where they could be seen.

The interior is made of cheap materials and is mostly hard plastic, but the seats were at least comfortable enough, even with a few hours of stint behind the wheels. The stereo looked like a 90’s relic, but it worked well and sounded beyond the dissonance of noise at high speeds. The infotainment system provides information about what is happening in the engine. It looks simple (easy to use), but it’s still convenient. Apple CarPlay is available.

Other available features include LED lighting, water resistant materials for open cockpit, cruise control, ABS, traction control, stability control, 18 inch front wheels, 20 inch rear wheels, double wishbone independent front suspension, 305mm. It is included. Rear tire.

For obvious reasons, the slingshot really only works as a weekend toy. Ideal for backroad blasts and urban cruising. However, it’s a fun toy. Even if I didn’t enjoy the line of sight from the passersby, it was fun to drive.

I couldn’t get Monroney at the exact price, but the base price for this trim is $ 32,799.

The company needs to work a little on the interior-a little better material and something that didn’t break-but this bike was bought to drive and it serves its main purpose well. Its purpose is fun, and it comes true.

As long as you are accustomed to being stereotyped as a D-bag, you can enjoy the experience. If it doesn’t rain.
