    1996 Saleen S-281 Mustang, Plastic Fantastic

Within these displacements, there were three different versions of 4.6 – two valves, four valves, and four valves with a supercharger. Several different transmissions were used.     The 4th generation Mustang was separated into the first SN-95 and an updated “New Edge” version, the latter coded by Ford for the SN-99. The SN-95 was offered from 1994 to 1998 model year, and the New Edge styling featured a long-life 4th generation mustang from 1999 to 2004.

    Steve Saleen has been in the Mustang remodeling business since 1984 and continued his efforts with the SN-95 in his first model year in 1994. Two basic Saleen Mustangs were provided with two different code numbers. The base model was the Mustang GT’s lightly heated S-281. Added Saleen-designed front and rear bumpers, body kits, Saleen badges and tape stripes, and some new wheels. Below that was an upgraded suspension. Saleen used a cubic inch displacement to label his Mustang during this period, and the 281 represented a 4.6-liter V8 of 220 horses under the hood. Another Saleen Mustang was the much more expensive S-351, which used a 5.8-liter V8 and implemented a number of performance changes. The top was R code S-351. One of them abandoned the backseat, reduced a lot of weight, and used a Saleen-provided V8 supercharged for 487 horsepower.

    Despite a slight upgrade to the standard Mustang GT, the S-281 became Saleen’s most popular product almost instantly, with the highest production of any Saleen car. Following the success of the S-281, Saleen has created several more versions. Supercharger Option created the S-281SC in 1999, boosting its power to 350 horses. There was also a Saleen version of Cobra (S-281C), an extreme version with a supercharger (S-281E), and a model called the American Flag (S-281AF), especially for veterans. Saleen has created a 3-valve model supercharger called the Heritage (H-281 3V). This resulted in the Heritage Dan Gurney (H-21DG) with a supercharger. There was a superleggera version, Racecraft 420-S, that was removed and with minimal changes. Finally, S-281 celebrated two different manufacturing anniversaries in Saleen with the announcement of special editions of the 15th Anniversary (SA-15) and 20th Anniversary (SA-20).

    The S-281 lineup has proven to be Saleen and permanent. It continued to the exit of the SN-99 Mustang and continued until 2009. A little less than half the execution of the 5th generation Mustang. By that time, Saleen had diverged from its roots and in 2005 the company became an OEM.
